Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science

The Department of Animal Bioveterinary Sciences is part of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science and is responsible for education and research in several fundamental and applied scientific areas. These areas include anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, pharmacology, toxicology, genetics, breeding, immunology, bacteriology, virology, parasitology, epizootiology, comparative medicine, food safety, bioinformatics, and One Health. Our research encompasses everything from production animals to sport and companion animals, laboratory animals, and wildlife. The department's researchers work across the spectrum from molecular mechanisms and microbiology to animal structure, function, and behavior, and how these are affected by breeding, physical activity, management, production, stress, environmental factors, and diseases.

Subject Description

Veterinary bacteriology encompasses how pathogenic bacteria function, acquire new properties, and spread among sport, companion, and food-producing animals (horses, dogs, cats, cattle, goats, sheep, pigs, poultry, and farmed fish). The subject includes studies of pathogenic bacteria where traditional and molecular biological methods are used to clarify the origin, pathogenesis, and resistance development of bacterial infections. The subject also includes pathogenic bacteria within the field of food microbiology. Additionally, diagnostics and the development of preventive measures such as vaccine development are included.

Job Responsibilities

The holder shall within the subject of employment:

  • develop and lead internationally successful research within the entire subject
  • develop, lead, and participate in teaching at undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels
  • primarily teach within the veterinary and animal nursing programs but also within bachelor’s and master’s programs and doctoral courses where the subject and related subjects are included
  • develop teaching methods and the use of digital tools specifically maintaining and developing the VetBact database
  • collaborate with other research groups within SLU to strengthen the university's interdisciplinary activities
  • contribute to the strategic development of the department, faculty, and SLU
  • develop and maintain national and international networks with academia, relevant authorities, industries, organizations, and society at large
  • apply for external research funding at both national and international levels
  • supervise doctoral students and candidates in specialist training
  • actively participate in clinical work and teaching
  • communicate research results and other relevant information to the surrounding community
  • perform administrative tasks within the department, faculty, and university.

Eligibility

The applicant must:

  • hold a PhD or equivalent scientific competence in a relevant subject for the position
  • be scientifically skilled within the subject of employment
  • be pedagogically skilled and able to integrate research and scientific approaches into their teaching
  • have experience in teaching at undergraduate and advanced levels
  • have good knowledge of English
  • have Swedish as the working language.

Assessment Criteria

The primary assessment criteria for employment shall be the degree of scientific competence required for eligibility for the position.

In assessing scientific competence, the following will be considered:

  • completed research efforts and ongoing research within the subject
  • the ability to independently initiate and conduct successful and internationally recognized research
  • the ability to obtain external research funding in competition
  • docent competence or equivalent competence in a relevant subject for the position.

In assessing pedagogical competence, the following will be considered:

  • planning, implementation, examination, and evaluation of one's own teaching
  • supervision and examination at undergraduate and advanced levels
  • the ability to integrate research and a scientific approach into pedagogical work
  • higher education pedagogical training or equivalent knowledge
  • pedagogical vision and reflection
  • development of teaching methods.

Furthermore, skill in:

  • developing and leading operations and personnel within academia
  • communicating and collaborating internally
  • cooperating with external stakeholders and the surrounding community
  • communicating research and development work.

It is advantageous if the applicant has molecular biological and bioinformatics competence within the subject.

The position is offered to the person who, after a qualitative overall assessment, is deemed to have the best conditions to carry out and develop the current tasks and contribute to a positive development of the operations.
